Achieving Aspirational Charter Growth Targets With Revolving Loan Funds: The Idaho Success Story

Achieving Aspirational Charter Growth Targets With Revolving Loan Funds: The Idaho Success Story

,
Magnolia 10

Charter school leaders, politicians, and funders often have ambitious visions for charter school expansion in their state. Too often, however, practical considerations, such as financing and building school facilities, stand in the way of achieving those objectives. In 2013, the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Family Foundation (JKAF) had an ambitious goal: to add 20,000 high-quality school seats across the state of Idaho in 10 years. To address the facility challenge, JKAF established a $33 million revolving loan fund, partnering with Building Hope and BLUUM to work with charter school founders to help underwrite and develop new charter school buildings. This fireside chat brings together experts at Building Hope and BLUUM, along with charter school leaders who benefited from the fund, to share their insights, discuss the nuances of administering these funds, and explore the ways this collaboration in Idaho can serve as a model to leaders in other states.
