Seeing the System To Change the System: Using Data To Change and Impact in Literacy

It sounds simple: You have to see the system to change the system. But what does that actually mean when championing an academic priority across a diverse set of schools?
We’ll unpack lessons from KIPP DC’s yearlong effort to align its 20-school network with the science of reading. In addition to high-quality curricular materials and investments in professional learning, leaders at KIPP DC have heavily invested in creating ways to “see” the system at every layer, from an external audit to robust data systems that view and take action on student, teacher, and coach data. This investment is paying dividends on how quickly system leaders can monitor the impact of their work and make real-time adjustments to drive implementation forward.
Through this case study, we’ll explore key components of a research-aligned ecosystem and share replicable processes for driving data reflection at every level.
