What are the pros and cons of students’ using cell phones in school? This session will present strategies by which educators may support the control of cell phones and will share a curriculum used to engage students as researchers and critical thinkers regarding into the impact of social media and share detailed communications with parents that helped achieve buy in. And of course, there will be tales of woe highlighting what didn’t work.

Principal
Ocean Academy Charter School
Dr. Dawn Cobb-Fossnes has been involved with education since 1980 as a high school teacher, guidance counselor, and principal. She was the founder of a private school that included international students. She has worked in the private and public education. She has also worked as adjunct professor in the School of Education at Liberty University with students working on their doctorate degree, an instructional mentor for professors, and a Mythologist. She is also the founder of Initiative in Education, an LLC that promotes curriculum on critical thinking and providing professional development for schools. Dawn holds a Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction/Special Education and a Master of Science in Educational Leadership/Administration. She is the coauthor on middle school curriculum on critical thinking. Dawn has been a professional speaker presenting workshops at teacher conferences. She is the founder of Melody Ministries, Inc., which is a non-profit that provides a free week of camp for underprivilege boys and girls. The camp was started in 1999 as a boys’ camp and in 2012 the girls’ camp was begun. She serves as an assessor for the Blue Ribbon School of Excellence as has been actively involved in helping school turnaround.
