Mr. Sharif El-Mekki


Mastery Charter Schools/The Fellowship - Black Mal


As the son of two Black Panther Party activists, El-Mekki desired to address social justice issues and student outcomes. This sense of urgency led El-Mekki to become a teacher in Philadelphia. El-Mekki just completed his eleventh year as the principal of the award winning Mastery Charter – Shoemaker Campus, a neighborhood chartered school that serves 780 students in grades 7-12. El-Mekki founded The Fellowship – Black Male Educators for Social Justice and is the Director of the Center for Black Educator Development, dedicated to increasing the numbers of Black teachers in public schools through policy, recruitment, and retention.
